Guido Messina
was born January 4, 1931 in Monreale, Italy and was a road and
track champion cyclist. He won the gold medal in the men's 4,000
meter team pursuit at the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics and rode
as a professional road cyclist from 1954 to 1963 during which he
won 5 World titles in the individual pursuit. He won his first
two titles as an amateur (1948, 1953), before turning
professional and winning three consecutive World Championships
(1954-56). His major road success came in the first stage of
1955 Giro d’Italia, which he won, earning him a day in the pink
jersey.
